Born of the pampa

Calichal was not formed to liven up a party. It was formed to hold a memory.

Founded on 2 August 1980 in the Tarapacá Region, Conjunto Calichal emerged from the need to rescue, preserve and project the cultural expressions of the desert, the nitrate pampa, the Andean ravines and the religious traditions of northern Chile.

From the start we understood that music had to be more than art: a tool for research, memory and identity. That is why the group’s work includes collecting songs, stories, customs, dances and festivities that form part of Tarapacá’s heritage.

The origin of the name

What does Calichal mean?

A calichal is the ground where caliche abounds: the mineral crust of the Atacama Desert from which Chilean nitrate was extracted.
